Vice-President Sezgin Tanrıkulu remarked that Roşin Çiçek case, which was heard at the Diyarbakır Third Criminal Court for Aggravated Crimes today, is that of a hate killing. Here is the his written statement:

“LGBTI people who are subjected to systematic discrimination, harassment and attacks are also targets of hate killings. Roşin Çiçek’s case, which will be heard at the Diyarbakır Third Criminal Court for Aggravated Crimes today is a case of hate killing. The fact that Roşin Çiçek, who was in the prime of his life, was killed on 2 July 2012 by his father and uncles, once again showed us the consequences of homophobia in this country.

Even though legal punishment for hate killings is important to discourage such crimes, in order to overcome the oppression and bullying against LGBTI people, it is clear that human rights defenders and politicians as well as all conscious segments of society should make a serious effort.

In the legislation on hate crimes and in the Constitution, it is vital to include provisions for the protection of LGBTI people and the government should not ignore these demands anymore.

The rights violations people experience because of their sexual orientations are absolutely unacceptable and a significant transformation in society is necessary to prevent the pressure, attacks, and murders committed against these individuals. Only the political institutions can pave the way for this.

Although Mr. Prime Minister preaches ‘We love the Created for the sake of the Creator’ at every turn, the fact that he never took steps for the protection of LGBTI people made him one of the main partners in this discrimination.

To ensure that other murders like the murder of Roşin Çiçek do not happen again, the ruling Justice and Development Party and all political institutions, non-governmental organizations, and public opinion leaders must fulfil their responsibilities. Otherwise, they are partners in hate crimes!”
